Industrial logistics for shipbuilding

A shipbuilding aside explains how yards, gearboxes, boilers, armor, rail, and coastal shipping shape where warships can be built.

Notes

Warship construction depends on the industrial geography around the yard. Good facilities on one coast do little to solve the problem of moving machinery, boilers, plate, and armor between factories and shipbuilders. In the British example, gearboxes or boilers made by Vickers could travel by sea to John Brown, while plate and armor usually moved by rail. A viable design still needs transport links and a supplier network capable of assembling it.
