Each private yard entered the interwar cruiser program with its own recent work and specialist skills. Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée had built cruisers for Russia and Japan before moving heavily toward liner work. Chantiers de la Loire combined ocean-liner and naval-aviation experience with renewed battleship construction. It had built two of France's four recent battleships and held contracts for another battleship and two aircraft carriers, making it central to plans for the future fleet. A simple list of yards conceals major differences in specialist knowledge and large-hull capacity.
