Electric drive still requires a weight and current-system choice

Lighter turbines could make electric drive more attractive, though a prewar installation would probably use DC before the later Daring trials.

Notes

A 1930s turbine-electric installation would probably use direct current in this scenario. It would precede the Daring-class comparison in which different ships used AC and DC systems. American experience with steam-electric propulsion illustrates the weight penalty of combining boilers, turbines, generating equipment and electric drive. Replacing the steam plant with lighter gas turbines could make that penalty easier to accommodate, supporting the case for a more survivable electrical layout.
