The Walrus joined reconnaissance with air-sea rescue

The Supermarine Walrus combined scouting with what is described here as the Royal Navy's first real search-and-rescue aircraft role.

Notes

The Walrus succeeded the Supermarine Seagull as a shipborne seaplane. It conducted reconnaissance and became the Royal Navy's first real search-and-rescue aircraft in the account given here. Both missions depended on locating people or forces across open water and returning useful information to the fleet. Inter-war naval aviation involved finding and assisting as well as striking.
