Four Parsons turbines developed roughly 51,000 shaft horsepower for the Moltke class. Power alone does not determine a warship's speed. Hull resistance, gearing efficiency, and propeller design all affect how much shaft power becomes useful motion. Two ships can therefore post similar horsepower figures and still achieve different speeds. Small improvements in each system could combine into a meaningful performance gain from one class to the next.

Small engineering gains turn horsepower into more speed
The Moltke-class machinery illustrates how turbines, hull form, gearing, and propeller design could make similar power figures produce different speeds.
