The pub shown in the presentation once served as a gathering point for oak and other timber cut in Surrey. Wood from dispersed local sources was brought together there before continuing toward shipbuilding sites. The later pub occupied a place where the timber trade already concentrated people and material. This inland collection network came before the better-known dockyard stages of wooden warship construction.
