The Supermarine Baby linked fighter speed with seaplane endurance

Inspect Supermarine's one-off 1919 seaplane fighter and the performance that made it competitive with early Schneider racers.

Notes

The Supermarine Baby was a single-seat seaplane fighter first flown in 1919, with only one example built. Its maximum speed of about 147 mph and endurance of two and a half hours would theoretically have exceeded the average speed of the 1920 Schneider winner. Its light structure and fixed-pitch wooden propeller belong to the compact experimental designs from which Supermarine's interwar work developed. Fighter performance, racing seaplanes, and the company's later speed programme were already closely connected.
