Single-engine power and turret weight

The turret, gunner, and armament imposed a weight penalty that single-engine aircraft such as the Roc or Defiant lacked the power to absorb.

Notes

The practical problem is power-to-weight ratio: the single-engine aircraft discussed had too little power to carry the turret, gunner, and armament without severely damaging performance. In this assessment, even 2,000 horsepower would be insufficient, while a twin-engine layout was a more plausible possibility. The P-61 Black Widow provides an example of a twin-engine aircraft with a remotely controlled turret. A de Havilland Mosquito might also have carried such a turret with less damage to its performance, though serious problems would remain. The Bristol Blenheim's design and existing defensive gun positions make it another possible starting point. The aircraft also needed more firepower, so adequate engine power alone would not make the turret effective.
