The repair ship carried a decompression chamber and separate shops for engineering, diesel engines, sheet metal, welding, coppersmithing, electronics, and other trades. Bringing those specialties together allowed the vessel to reproduce much of a shore repair facility wherever it anchored. Internal volume, rather than a sophisticated combat hull, made the arrangement possible. A modern small container ship could be adapted on the same principle. The example turns ship conversion into a lesson about concentrating industrial capability in a mobile platform.

A repair ship concentrates many industrial trades
Cape Breton's decompression chamber and specialist workshops show how a spacious hull can become a self-contained repair complex.
