Palmer's and the depth of Britain's shipbuilding market

Palmer's warship record and the national yard list reveal how many British firms could build substantial naval vessels.

Notes

Palmer's had built the battlecruiser HMS Queen Mary, battleships including HMS Russell and HMS Resolution, the cruiser HMS York, destroyers, and monitors before the company failed. That record shows that even a bankrupt yard could have possessed serious warship expertise and infrastructure. The survey then ranges across builders in England, Scotland, Wales, and Belfast that could produce Flower-class vessels or larger ships. It excludes the many smaller yards and, as clarified later, the Royal Dockyards that also built ships. The result is a conservative picture of Britain's ability to distribute naval and merchant work among numerous establishments.
