How launches multiply the Admiralty's engine orders

Launches, aircraft, and torpedo boats create a combined engine market that can sustain suppliers and press for more power.

Notes

An illustrative order compares 200 RAF engines with 900 for the Navy: 800 for twin-engined launches and another 100 for aircraft. Spare parts and motor torpedo boats add further demand. The same industrial capacity can consequently support both flying units and small craft. Naval demand for high power-to-weight ratios also connects the argument to the later 2,000-horsepower Griffon and Napier Sabre programmes. During the war, diverting engine capacity to aircraft could leave launches short of engines. Retaining naval aviation is expected to strengthen that combined market earlier, although it does not establish a precise development timetable.
