Could a small battleship crew maintain and fight the ship without exhausting its sailors?
Short answerMaintenance still requires enough people, but switching between redundant systems would allow work in normal shifts. An ideal of 100 sailors becomes an expected complement of about 300.
NotesA small crew still has to maintain the ship and fight it without running people into the ground. Switching to auxiliary systems would allow maintenance on the other equipment during normal shifts. Remote monitoring would let additional systems be carried without a matching increase in personnel, although maintenance teams would still be needed. An ideal target of 100 sailors becomes an expected complement of about 300, compared with roughly 190 for a Type 45 destroyer. These are estimates for the proposed design, whose spare systems give crews time to triage work.
