Why liquid propellant is dangerous aboard warships

Liquid propellant may sound elegant in isolation, but battle damage turns its mobility into a fire and containment hazard.

Question

Could liquid propellant simplify ammunition handling for a large autoloading gun?

Short answer

Its ability to leak and flow through a damaged, burning ship makes the apparent handling advantage dangerously unattractive.

Notes

Liquid propellant is appealing in the abstract and hazardous in the environment of a warship. Penetration, fire, broken piping, and leaking fuel-like material make solid or cased charges safer to control. Separating a binary mixture does not remove the battle-damage problem because storage and delivery systems can still rupture. Naval engineering must test elegant mechanisms against fire, flooding, shock, and containment failure.
