HMS Thunderer at the scale of 3,400 oaks

The material bill for one 74-gun ship turns mature oak, finished timber, and pre-railway transport into concrete industrial quantities.

Notes

HMS Thunderer, an early 74-gun third rate, gives the physical scale behind a single warship. She required roughly 3,400 fully mature oak trees and about 2,400 tons of wood in the completed vessel before counting the masts. That timber mass approached the ship's estimated fully loaded weight. Every usable piece had to reach a dockyard before railways and modern road networks. A second rate might require at least another 500 tons of wood and a first rate perhaps another 1,000, while the timber delivered to the yard exceeded what finally entered the hull. Procurement enforcement and transport capacity were integral parts of naval power.
