Adventure was unusually long-lived for the type. She served for about 45 years as a fourth rate before being cut down and rebuilt as a fifth rate in 1691, then continued for another 18 years. Her roughly 63-year career demonstrates the durability possible in a wooden warship and the value of rebuilding an aging hull for a role better suited to changing naval requirements. The short interval between her December 1645 order and the 1646 programme suggests that timber had already been stockpiled and planning had begun well before the formal order.
