More engine power for torpedo-spotter-reconnaissance aircraft

Naval demand could raise standard engine power to an estimated 1,500-1,600 horsepower by 1938-1939 while preserving the practical requirements of TSR aircraft.

Notes

The estimate for 1938-1939 is a standard naval engine of about 1,500-1,600 horsepower; 2,000 horsepower by 1938 is expressly left unclaimed. A more powerful Swordfish-like aircraft could fly faster and higher while retaining the low-speed control needed for torpedo delivery. Higher performance could also require a canopy. Ease of maintenance and the ability to operate far from British factories would remain naval requirements. A pilot and navigator would still be needed, with a telegraphist-air-gunner providing an additional pair of eyes for tasks such as submarine patrols.
