Why gas turbines could simplify machinery refits

A viewer asks whether compact gas turbines would be easier to rebuild and replace than a ship's steam plant.

Question

Would gas turbines be easier to rebuild or replace than steam machinery?

Short answer

Yes; the turbine itself is more removable, and eliminating boilers, steam piping, and feed-water systems makes the surrounding refit much simpler.

Notes

A gas turbine can be broken down and removed more readily than a combined boiler and steam-turbine installation. Eliminating boilers also removes much of the steam piping, feed-water storage, and supporting machinery that makes a major refit intrusive. Standardized turbine modules could eventually make replacement and overhaul more routine across several ship classes. The first generation would still impose a training burden because dockyards and crews would be learning unfamiliar machinery.
