Why G3's armor did not automatically make it a fast battleship

The G3 combined heavy protection with cruiser-derived internal choices and global mobility requirements, leaving it on the battlecruiser side of this design spectrum.

Notes

The G3 sat near the fast-battleship boundary but remained on the battlecruiser side in this interpretation despite its formidable armor. Internal structure and subdivision matter because battleship-like protection laid over a more cruiser-oriented framework does not create the same balance as a battleship-derived hull. The middle main-gun position also placed its magazine close to the boiler spaces while designers tried to reconcile armor, machinery, and metacentric height. The design still needed strategic mobility and enough fighting power to meet the Kongo, Lexington, or Amagi classes across Britain's worldwide commitments. Other historians can reasonably weigh the G3's protection and structure differently.
