G3 conversions anchor a five-carrier strike force

Two declared 33,000-ton G3 conversions and three roughly 23,000-ton ships could form a five-carrier striking force.

Notes

The conversion clause allows two carriers of up to 33,000 tons from ships otherwise due for scrapping. In the proposed British case, G3 hulls treated as barely started conversions would leave few inherited design compromises. Hangars could follow Eagle and Hermes, while machinery ducting and uptakes could be arranged from the outset. Two declared 33,000-ton ships would use 66,000 tons of the 135,000-ton carrier allowance. The remaining allowance would support three carriers of about 23,000 tons. Small carriers outside the counted allowance would supply the extra flight decks needed for cruising duties and overseas presence.
