Earle's Shipbuilding and the mid-sized yard problem

St George's builder was a capable mid-sized shipyard caught between low-value small craft and scarce prestigious large-ship contracts.

Notes

Earle's of Hull built sound warships, including St George, but occupied an awkward industrial middle ground. Its work was technically credible and some of its ships remained in use for many years. The yard was too large to live comfortably on fishing boats and small merchant ships. Yet it lacked the scale and reputation needed to secure enough major orders for stable finances. Industrial position could matter as much as build quality.
