Dido-class cruisers expose the cost of treaty-limited hulls

Comparing the Dido class with 4.5-inch conversions of older cruisers exposes the cost of undersized treaty-era British hulls.

Notes

The Dido class offers strong anti-destroyer and anti-aircraft firepower, but heavily converted C-, D-, or E-class cruisers might cover similar duties. That comparison leads to a broader criticism of British cruiser design after the Town class. Treaty limits encouraged hulls with too little size and growth margin for later improvements. The difficulty was less the Dido armament itself than fitting expanding wartime roles into tightly constrained ships.
