Gas turbines make Dido-class cruisers faster responders

A lighter four- or eight-turbine plant could preserve the class's power or raise it enough for roughly 35-36 knots and quicker operational response.

Notes

The Dido class historically obtained about 62,000 shaft horsepower from four Admiralty boilers and four geared steam turbines. Four 15,000-horsepower gas turbines would deliver nearly the same output with a much smaller machinery commitment, while eight 11,000-horsepower units could raise output to about 88,000. The more powerful arrangement might lift speed from roughly 32 knots into the 35-36-knot range. Rapid turbine startup and higher transit speed would let the Royal Navy react sooner, cover distance faster, and leave more time for loading before sailing. An eight-unit installation producing 120,000 horsepower would make hull reinforcement a possible use for some of the saved weight.
