Daring versus Forrest Sherman as postwar gun destroyers

Daring's six 4.5-inch guns and ten torpedoes are weighed against Forrest Sherman's three automatic 5-inch/54 guns in a close comparison of their original armaments.

Question

Was the British Daring class better than the American Forrest Sherman class?

Short answer

Daring is given a slight edge as built because of its gun and torpedo armament, while either class could win an actual engagement.

Notes

The Forrest Sherman class began as gun destroyers, although some were later converted to carry missiles. Their three automatic 5-inch/54 guns offered a high rate of fire. As built, the Darings carried six 4.5-inch guns in three twin mounts, ten torpedoes, and 40 mm armament. The larger number of gun barrels gives Daring a slight edge in the comparison by putting more shells downrange and improving the chance of a hit. Either class would still have a good chance in an actual engagement. USS Hull's later 8-inch gun is an exception to this comparison between the original armaments.
