The D3A combines combat experience with a strong engine

Experienced crews and a strong power-to-weight ratio help the D3A remain an effective strike aircraft while its replacement is delayed.

Notes

Delays introducing the D4Y kept the D3A in front-line service for much of World War II. It remained a capable attack aircraft, credited with sinking destroyers, cruisers and aircraft carriers. Many crews had gained confidence in the type through operations over China before the Pacific War. A strong engine gave the heavier dive bomber a power-to-weight ratio close to the Zero's. The stated ratio is corrected aloud from a mistyped 1.5 to about 0.15 horsepower per pound, which is the basis of the comparison.
