Queen Elizabeth, Valiant, and Renown are candidates for refits, while Ark Royal and the Illustrious-class carriers would exchange their planned 4.5-inch batteries for 4.7-inch mounts. The carrier change would have only a modest effect on rate of fire because the two weapons are close in performance. A heavier 4.7-inch shell might offer slightly more explosive effect and range. The larger gain comes from using one ammunition and training system across several ship types.
