Cammell Laird and the value of a large graving dock

Cammell Laird illustrates how yard history, dock size, security, and investment decisions determine the work a modern shipbuilder can take on.

Notes

The Birkenhead yard emerged from the merger of Laird Brothers and Johnson Cammell, with its rolling-stock interests later separated into Metropolitan Cammell. After closing in 1993, the site revived as a repair and maintenance business and returned to construction work with RFA Sir David Attenborough. Its large dock could in theory accommodate Queen Elizabeth-class carriers, but the adjacent road makes security a practical concern. Proposals for an even larger graving dock would still require funding, planning permission, and a viable business case. This is a concrete example of infrastructure being a strategic asset whose usefulness depends on practical access and investment.
