When choosing a smaller ship design helps

Smaller designs can fit more shipyards or reach landing places inaccessible to larger vessels.

Question

When was choosing a smaller ship variant the right decision?

Short answer

When mass production needed more usable yards, or landing operations required access to restricted places.

Notes

Fletchers and Liberty ships may be examples of smaller designs helping production. A ship fitting more yards can use a wider industrial base. That matters when large wartime output is the goal. Landing craft face another size limit because larger vessels can lose access to some landing places. Careful design can mitigate that constraint, but a force composed entirely of tank landing ships would still be undesirable.
