British, Indian and Chinese carrier propulsion choices

Carrier size permits several propulsion arrangements, and the expected future fleet can influence which machinery a navy retains.

Notes

The Queen Elizabeth class demonstrates that diesel and gas machinery can remain useful in a very large carrier. India's COGAG arrangement combines gas turbines configured for different operating conditions. General Electric LM2500 turbines are recalled as the Indian machinery choice. Chinese carriers use oil-fired steam in this comparison. For a future Chinese nuclear carrier, retaining steam machinery provides continuity because nuclear propulsion also uses steam.
