Breakaway wingtips expose a production tradeoff

A clever weight-saving wingtip concept worked differently in factory production, forcing designers to replace automatic breakaway tips with an explosive system.

Notes

The Bearcat's original wingtip arrangement let the outer sections break away under excessive load while leaving the aircraft able to return. This reduced the need to build the entire wing to the same structural strength and weight. The design also exposed the gap between a carefully made experimental component and high-volume factory production. Production tolerances made passive breakaway behavior less dependable than intended. An explosive system replaced it, turning a clever structural compromise into a practical manufacturing lesson.
