Damage control with sacrificial spaces and redundant machinery

Sacrificial compartments and duplicated systems allow a smaller crew to concentrate on keeping the core ship afloat and operational.

Notes

The concept deliberately includes spaces and auxiliary machinery that could be abandoned after damage. If a primary system were lost, secondary, tertiary, or auxiliary equipment elsewhere in the hull could take over, allowing the crew to concentrate on what is essential for survival and combat. Automated systems would handle other damaged areas until the crew could investigate after the battle or obtain support in port. This approach is intended to reduce the crew required and the number of sailors exposed to danger. For contemporary shipboard fire suppression, CO2 is identified as more common than halon.
