Turboshaft helicopters reshape convoy anti-submarine warfare

Early turbine development makes helicopter-equipped sloops and rudimentary airborne sonar plausible during the Second World War.

Notes

An escort sloop with guns forward and a helicopter hangar and flight deck aft could reduce some dependence on escort carriers. A turboshaft helicopter could force surfaced U-boats to submerge, cutting their speed and battery endurance even before it achieved a kill. Period marine research already used suspended hydrophones, providing a conceptual route toward a crude dipping-sonar set rather than a modern sensor appearing fully formed. The aircraft might also threaten low-flying Focke-Wulf Condor reconnaissance aircraft, although anti-submarine search and convoy protection remain its central value.
