How replating extends a warship hull's service life

A Type 23 example shows why a ship's service age does not mean every part of its hull is equally old.

Question

How long can a warship hull last?

Short answer

There is no fixed life: usage and refit investment matter, and Type 23 frigates required replacement hull plating to remain in service.

Notes

Hull life depends on how intensively a ship is used and how much renewal a navy funds during refits. Corroded or fatigued plating does not require the whole vessel to be discarded if the structure can accept major steel renewal. Some Type 23 frigates have sections of comparatively new hull because plating had to be replaced for the ships to continue serving. A ship's commissioning date is an imperfect guide to the physical age of every part of its hull.
