Where Britain should invest defense-infrastructure funding

Spare docks and scalable factories are priorities, with disagreement over how broadly limited funding can sustain domestic military production.

Question

How should Britain spend defense funding allocated to infrastructure?

Short answer

Fund spare repair capacity and factories able to expand quickly, while choosing affordable production priorities and sustaining domestic suppliers.

Notes

Spare port and dry-dock capacity would give Britain room to redirect work and support the fleet when existing facilities were stretched. One proposal would keep factories producing tanks, shells, rifles and missiles at a low rate while paying for the ability to expand rapidly. A narrower set of priorities follows: the available money may not support every category, so missile manufacture and small military boats should come first. Buying those boats abroad for immediate savings would work against the aim of rebuilding domestic capacity. Defence contracts could instead sustain British suppliers and the industrial base needed to support the armed forces.
