If Britain is short of air-defence destroyers, why not restart Type 45 production?
Short answerBritain could build something better using the naval architecture and shipyard skills developed through continuing construction since Type 45.
NotesBritain could build something better using the design and industrial skills developed since Type 45. Before the class, a gap after the Type 23 programme had allowed work and investment in the yards to decline. Subsequent construction maintained a flow of work, sometimes using River-class patrol vessels to fill gaps. At other times British yards lacked space or interest for tanker contracts, which went to Korea. That uneven but continuing production allowed skills to mature and recover. Those advances support choosing a newer design.
