Escort numbers shape a navy’s useful strength

A force-structure answer argues that a small destroyer and frigate fleet rapidly loses resilience, however capable individual ships may be.

Question

How many future British escorts are needed?

Short answer

Enough hulls are needed to preserve availability and resilience, ideally twelve Type 83s with substantial frigate numbers.

Notes

Twelve Type 83 destroyers are preferred, nine would be acceptable, and fewer than six would create a serious force problem. Adequate Type 26 and Type 32 numbers matter for the same reason. A navy must keep ships available through maintenance, training, and deployments rather than count every hull as continuously ready. Fleet capacity depends on sustained availability as well as the capability of each platform.
