HMS Bristol embodied the large Type 82 destroyer concept. Planned sister ships would have led escort groups, reinforced carrier air defence, carried command staffs, and undertaken independent presence missions. Bristol later carried a vice admiral and staff after the Falklands campaign, demonstrating the space built into a destroyer expected to do cruiser work. Her combined steam-and-gas propulsion and substantial generating capacity accompanied the Ikara anti-submarine system, a 4.5-inch gun, and Sea Dart. The design had no helicopter and only one main gun and missile system, with the single gun itself prompting uncertainty within the Navy. Command space and an imposing appearance helped give Type 82 a role above the smaller Type 42 in the proposed force.
