Type 42 was designed as the smaller destroyer tier beneath Type 82, adding Sea Dart firepower to carrier groups, convoys, small amphibious forces, and allied formations. Its different radar and missile system complicated an opponent's electronic-warfare problem by broadening the systems that had to be jammed or evaded. The ship's design centred on carrying Sea Dart as an area-air-defence weapon, even though it carried other equipment. Sea Dart also linked Type 42 with Type 82, the Invincible class, and the unbuilt CVA-01, which was planned to carry Sea Cat as well. Combinations of Sea Dart and Sea Wolf, including possible upgrades to a larger Type 82 programme, remain design alternatives in this discussion. The smaller Type 42 offered a cheaper way to add firepower, but its usefulness within a formation did not make it an ideal match for every independent British mission.

Type 42 added Sea Dart firepower to a larger task group
The smaller Type 42 supplied area air defence and complicated enemy jamming, with a role alongside larger ships and allied systems.
