Two-seat fighters escort long-range and night strikes

The Fleet Air Arm's two-seat fighter-reconnaissance aircraft provide escorts for distant strikes, including possible night attacks.

Notes

The Fleet Air Arm maintained separate long-range fighter-reconnaissance and single-seat fleet-defence roles. Two-seat reconnaissance fighters provided the range needed to escort Swordfish on distant missions, including possible night attacks. An enemy able to defend itself in darkness could make those escorts necessary. The Fairey Fulmar served this long-range role. The Navy still sought a modern single-seat fighter, with the Sea Gladiator filling the gap at the beginning of World War II.
