Four gas turbines could replace the Tribals' three boilers and two geared steam turbines while retaining two shafts. At 11,000 horsepower per unit they would match the original 44,000 shaft horsepower, while four 15,000-horsepower units could raise output to 60,000. The smaller machinery commitment could reduce crew requirements and permit fewer funnels and finer subdivision. A quintuple torpedo launcher might replace the quadruple, although an additional launcher is considered unlikely. The ability to shut down in harbour and start again quickly would also shorten the time needed to put a destroyer to sea.
