The Supermarine Walrus is designed to remain available worldwide

The Walrus's repairable structure and familiar engine suit distant service, where a cruiser cannot assume access to fleet aviation support.

Notes

The Supermarine Walrus combined reconnaissance and search-and-rescue duties with a design intended for simple maintenance far from Britain. Its pusher engine was selected partly in the belief that it would be less exposed to salt spray during water operations. That explanation rested on interwar visual observation, and later computer modelling can challenge some contemporary assumptions. A familiar Pegasus engine and repairable structure mattered more than peak performance, while range was about 520 nautical miles. In key fleet areas, the forward aviation support ship HMS Unicorn could sustain naval aircraft. Its treaty classification placed it outside the aircraft-carrier category, even though its layout informed later light fleet carriers. A lone cruiser elsewhere in the South Atlantic or Pacific could not assume that support was nearby.
