Why a power-station boiler faces different demands at sea

A ship's motion, changing speed and multiple boilers made an exacting experimental steam system much harder to control.

Notes

The boiler design used elaborate arrangements to superheat steam and increase pressure. It depended on very consistent inputs and required an automatic system from Germany that had not been designed for these particular boilers. A stationary power station offered a relatively stable platform and steady load. A warship pitched and rolled, changed speed and needed varying quantities of steam. Several smaller boilers also had to work in balance. Those differences made fuel delivery and control central problems in adapting the concept to a ship. In this interpretation, few experienced specialists remained to challenge the specification, and fewer still were prepared to raise objections within the Soviet system.
