Sovereign of the Seas and the meaning of a long service life

Sovereign of the Seas illustrates how cutting down, rebuilding, and repeated refitting could keep a major wooden warship relevant for sixty years.

Notes

The ship complicates the boundary between razee and rebuild because even after being cut down she still carried about one hundred guns. The Dutch singled out the 'Golden Devil' for a special reward, and during the Battle of the Kentish Knock the grounded ship became an objective fought over by both fleets. Rebuilt as a 100-gun first rate in 1660, she served until an unattended candle caused her destruction in 1697.
