The Swedish destroyer Småland provides an earlier example of machinery controlled from protected spaces. Its engine rooms include NBC-secure positions from which operators could run the machinery. They already relied on instruments for equipment they could not see directly. The proposed modern extension would move those operators into the combat information centre or damage-control section, further reducing the need for personnel to remain beside individual engines.

Småland and the move toward centralized machinery control
Småland's protected machinery-control spaces illustrate how instruments can separate operators from the engines they supervise.
