Could a six-year-old Kongo-like battlecruiser be rebuilt as a fast carrier while retaining heavy guns and armour?
Short answerThe proposed changes are so extensive that a new carrier would be cheaper, especially if barbettes, armour, and an oversized hangar remain in the design.
NotesThe proposal combines a full flight deck, four twin 8-inch turrets, retained belt armour, new turbo-electric machinery, and a speed increase from 26 to 30 knots. Replacing nearly every major system on a ship only six years into service discards much of the original investment. Keeping the old barbettes consumes internal volume and leaves heavy structures that no longer support a useful main battery. A hangar nearly the full length and maximum beam of the ship creates further structural, exhaust, and stability problems. Removing the guns and armour might make conversion possible, but a purpose-built hull remains the economical answer.
