Dry docks, shipyard capacity and fleet availability

Britain's inherited yards supported wartime production, while neglected dock upgrades can leave ships waiting for repairs.

Notes

Britain's inherited industrial capacity helped sustain wartime shipbuilding while the Navy kept experimenting with designs. Victorian infrastructure supplied much of that capacity. The later criticism concerns repair facilities whose major upgrades had been deferred for decades. Too few suitable dry docks can leave ships unavailable even when a navy still owns enough hulls for its tasks.
