Renown's major 1936 reconstruction

New machinery, fire control, dual-purpose guns, armour, and aircraft facilities transformed Renown before the Second World War.

Notes

The major reconstruction replaced machinery and removed two boiler rooms while retaining useful speed, freeing protected space for larger magazines. A new tower structure, fire-control arrangements, 4.5-inch dual-purpose battery, and aviation facilities made Renown far more suitable for a war shaped by aircraft. Her main turrets gained greater elevation, and the new secondary battery could engage both aircraft and small surface attackers. The cost comparison underlines how a comprehensive rebuild could rival a ship's original construction price.
