RAF formation and the Fleet Air Arm problem

Rivalry between the Royal Flying Corps and RNAS led to an independent RAF that struggled to serve carrier aviation well.

Notes

The case for an independent air service was plausible, especially for United Kingdom air defence and Army support. The problem came from placing everything that flew under one organization. Carrier aviation required aviators who understood ships and ship operators who understood aircraft. Without that overlap, the Royal Navy risked losing the experience needed to design and operate efficient carriers that delivered reach and striking power.
