How Queen Elizabeth-class carriers move people, stores, and weapons

The carriers combine large food capacity, fast passenger-transfer boats, and a highly mechanized magazine to sustain a large embarked force with a comparatively small handling crew.

Notes

The panel uses the Queen Elizabeth class to show how modern carrier endurance depends on more than the size of a storeroom. A ship can carry about 1,600 people at maximum capacity, including an air wing and troops, and must feed them for an extended deployment. Fast passenger-transfer boats named for Fleet Air Arm aircraft can shuttle personnel and supplies when the carrier cannot berth alongside. Inside the ship, the highly mechanized weapon-handling system moves pallets with lifts and electric vehicles in a magazine compared to an automated warehouse. The equipment reduces routine manpower and physical strain even though a larger team is normally available than the minimum needed to run it.
