Type 22 and Type 23 frigates offered more adaptable peacetime platforms than the Type 42 destroyer. Compartmentation and usable internal routes made it easier to host people and support duties beyond the ships' narrow combat specifications. The Type 22 also had cruiser-like qualities even though the Royal Navy did not formally rate it as a cruiser. Pairing Type 26 and Type 31 similarly accepts two levels of cruising warship instead of expecting one hull to cover every task.
