Future uncrewed partners are expected to carry missiles and may offer landing or refuelling points for uncrewed aircraft if sufficient automation becomes possible. They are likely to need basic accommodation, including toilets, for maintainers sent aboard. Wartime reliability must allow for enemies actively trying to break the equipment as well as ordinary failures. A vessel forced to return home for repairs can be as unavailable to the operation as one that has been destroyed. Keeping engineering teams aboard the crewed ships and providing access to their partners would permit some repairs at sea.
